Who we are

Give a Fig Hideaways is the baby of Rebecca and Natalie. We are sisters who care deeply about the natural world and community life. One of the major drives on our Give a Fig journey is to encourage people to enjoy local UK holidays that are so far removed from their every day surroundings, they wouldn’t miss going abroad. Human-caused climate change has already proven to increase risks of floods, extreme rain fall, heat waves, and wildfires, with all the complications this brings for the environment, animals and humans. We believe we can make small differences by offering low impact holidaying in the UK, suggesting local activities and supporting local businesses.

Every quarter we have pledged to plant 125 trees in Kenya, Madagascar, Peru and Uganda through Ecologi. This will equate to a copse of 500 trees a year. Planting trees has a number of benefits for mitigating climate change, supporting biodiversity and for human health. We believe that a lack of biodiversity is one of the most serious aspects of the climate crisis that we face. Our hope is that by planting trees we can do some small thing to mitigate the destruction of habitats that we are seeing diminish before our eyes.

We want to offer our guests a magical escape and a chance to reconnect with the natural world, while still enjoying all the amenities of modern living. We have stayed in Moonlit Mushroom many times and Natalie’s family are currently living in Dairy Cottage. We know these accommodations inside out and have fallen in love with them, as we know others will too. The rolling hills never cease to take our breath away and make washing the dishes surprisingly enjoyable!

Where we are

We are nestled in the Clwydian Mountain Range, near the top of an Iron Age hill fort, Moel y Gaer, with views that stretch for miles and give a clear view of Moel Famau (Mother Mountain), the largest in the range.

Mold is our closest town and is definitely worth a visit. A lovely little market is held every Wednesday and Saturday offering a wide array of local produce, plants, ceramics, and clothing. Mold itself has a wonderful book shop that often hosts talks from authors, Theatre Clwyd showing a selection of plays, comedy club nights and art exhibits, as well as a lovely church, bakeries, a sweet shop and an array of places to eat and drink - we highly recommend The Waffle Box!

We are less than 30 minutes from Chester with its theatre, cinema, shops and restaurants. Chester used to be England’s largest Roman fortification and there are walking tours that take you to see the best of what remains, including the well preserved Roman walls that can still be walked on.

Further afield North Wales offers a host of natural delights and excellent walking, cycling and water sports opportunities. We are 30 miles from Snowdonia for the bravest amongst you. For those who favour more gentle walking we are 15 minutes from Loggherheads Country Park. For the water babies amongst us, we recommend a canoe trip over the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct or one of the many beaches in easy reach. Our favourite is Talacre Beach for the haunted lighthouse!

“There is a pleasure in the pathless woods,

There is a rapture on the lonely shore,

There is society, where none intrudes,

By the deep sea, and music in its roar;

I love not man the less, but Nature more”

- Byron
